Fred Ettish Shinshi

I began Martial Arts training in 1969 and am currently ranked Hachidan (8th Degree Black Blet) in Shorin Ryu Matsumura. I have been a Mixed Martial Arts practitioner since 1994, competing in Ultimate Fighting Championship 2 and started teaching MMA in 1998. My current instruction includes conditioning, striking, defense/counter-fighting, and strategy. He spends his time mentoring fighters for local cage fights including Calvin Williams Jr., Anthony Ryan and Gary Guthrie. Sensei Fred also offers traditional Okinawan Kenpo to preserve his martial arts heritage.

The Damaibushi Martial Arts Logo

The term “Damaibushi” is Okinawan in origin, and, as with so many things from the Okinawan/Japanese language(s), there is really no literal translation that fits neatly. The closest translation is “Quiet Warrior”, or more appropriately, “Quiet Knight”, since the term “warrior” in this context denotes more than just someone who fights, but one who also lives by a strong moral and ethical code, especially when it comes to using martial skills against another human being.
